Students taking part in the Olympiad learn science through hands-on participation in innovative science activities.  Over 12,000 schools from all 50 states participate in Science Olympiad, and the number is increasing rapidly.  Involvement of students in the ESO improves the quality of science education and stimulates student interest in the sciences.

The Elementary Science Olympiad, a scaled-down version of the Division B (Grades 6-9) and Division C (Grades 9-12) Science Olympiads, is an academic interscholastic competition consisting of a series of individual and team events for which students prepare throughout the year.  Participating students interact with one another, learn subject matter, and have fun with science.  The Division A2 Elementary Science Olympiad is intended for students in Grades 3-6.  Teams of 12 students (plus 3 alternates) are invited to participate from area elementary schools.  More than one team may enter from a single school.  Teams compete in a number of individual and group competitions, for which they earn points for their team.  Team and individual awards are provided at the end of the competition.

Participation in Science Olympiads has been directly related to increased interest and achievement in science and math.  Events in the ESO relate directly to National Science Education Content Standards and to Alabama Content Standards for Science.  An illustration of the relationship of specific events to content standards can be found here.

Alabama Power is sponsoring this event this year and publicizing their Science in a Suitcase program.  Alabama Power will have several suitcase kits set up throughout the day at the ESO for people to try out and see what the program is all about.  These kits will be on the 1st floor of Wallace Hall.  Also with their sponsorship, Alabama Power employees have agreed to direct some of the ESO activities.
